What is a UCA?
- Unified Computer Accounts, or UCAs, are unique usernames assigned to every faculty member, staff member, and student at FSU and Pierpont C&TC.
- When you activate your UCA you will get a notification screen that tells you what the username is. Typically, it is the initial of your first name followed by your last name and in some cases a number. Ex. Freddie Falcon will have a UCA of ffalcon1. If he is a student at Pierpont C&TC his email address will be ffalcon1@students.pierpont.edu.
- UCAs cannot be changed. Even if you change your name your UCA will not change. If your UCA has been misspelled contact the Solution Center 304-367-4810 option 3.
- If you do not know what your UCA is you can contact the Solution Center at 304-367-4810 option 3.
How do I activate my UCA?
- Go to Fairmont State Homepage.
- Click the Enrollment Center link in the upper right hand corner.
- On the left, under Page Links, click on Activate Unified Computer Account (Fifth bullet).
- Enter Social Security number click next.
- Follow instructions. Be careful hint question and password are case sensitive.
- It will take 15 minutes for your password to take effect.
- STUDENTS: Once you have waited 15 minutes, log into Webmail and activate your Outlook Live email account. Use the following link for detailed directions on how to activate:

How do I change my UCA Password?
- Go to Fairmont State Homepage.
- Click the Enrollment Center link in the upper right hand corner.
- On the left, under Page Links, click on Change UCA Password (Fourth bullet).
- Enter your UCA click next.
- Answer hint question.
- Type your new password in the box.
- Retype your password in the second box.
- Click change password now.
- It will take 15 minutes for all systems to update your password.
NOTE: If you are logged into a computer on campus and choose to use the Windows Change Password tool (CTRL+ALT+DEL-->Change Password) then you must log off and log back in to all systems before you can access their content. After using this utility it will take 5 minutes for all systems to update your password.
Why can't I log onto this computer?
- If you are a faculty or staff member you will use the FAIRMONTSTATE domain to log onto computers. If the computer you are trying to log onto is set up to log onto the STUDENTS domain you must enter FAIRMONTSTATE\yourUCA in the username field.
- If you are a student you will use the STUDENTS domain to log onto computers. If the computer you are trying to log onto is set up to log onto the FAIRMONTSTATE domain you must enter STUDENTS\yourUCA in the username field.
How do I change my Security Question and Answer?
- Log into FELiX.
- Select the Personal Information tab.
- Click "Change Security Question".
- Follow the directions listed.
- The Answers are case sensitive. You must match this answer when changing your password.
- Click Submit.
I am an alumnus. How do I request an email account?
At this time we are not providing alumni with e-mail accounts. If you had a UCA while you were a student you can re-activate that UCA and have access to e-mail. The FSU Office of Information Technology may be changing this policy later in order to allow creation of alumni e-mail accounts. Please check the Solution Center webpage to see if there have been changes to the policy. If you have further questions or concerns please call 304-367-4810 or e-mail help@fairmontstate.edu.
Connect
How do I connect my laptop or desktop to the FSU wireless network?
You must install the compatible VPN client for your Operating System in order to connect to the FSU wireless network. We do not offer a VPN client that is Windows 7 compatible. We do not offer a VPN client that is compatible with 64-bit Operating Systems. If you do not know what Operating System you are running see "How to Check my Operating System version". If you are running a 64-bit Operating System or Windows 7 Operating System you will need to connect to the FSU-GUESTS network. See "How do I connect to the FSU-GUESTS wireless network".
- Use your wireless connection utility to display available networks.
- Connect to "FSU" network.
- Open up a browser window. If you are not directed to the How to Connect page go to http://www.fairmontstate.edu/it/wireless/howtoconnect.asp.
- Use the directions listed there to choose the correct version of the VPN client and install it.
- Once the VPN client is installed and the profile is imported connect to the VPN. STUDENTS: You must enter students\yourUCA into the username field and your UCA password into the password field.
- If you lose connectivity you must re-connect to the VPN in order to gain access to the network.
How do I connect my laptop or desktop to the FSU-GUESTS wireless network?
- User your wireless connection utility to display available networks.
- Connect to "FSU-GUESTS" network.
- Open a browser window. You must accept the certificate to be redirected to a Cisco Authentication page https://1.1.1.1/login.html?redirect.
- When prompted, enter your email address and click Accept.
- If you lose connectivity you must re-enter your email address and click Accept.
I am a student living in the dorms. How do I connect my gaming system to the FSU network?
- FSU's current security model does not support gaming on the wireless network. If you live in College Park Apartments you will not be able to connect your gaming system to the network.
- Contact the Solution Center in person at 104 Colebank Hall, via email at help@fairmontstate.edu, or over the phone at 304-367-4810 option 3. Provide the following information:
- Your Name
- Your UCA
- Your Dorm Room and Building
- Your phone number
- Your email address
- Your device's MAC address
How can I connect other devices to the FSU network? (i.e. wireless routers and access points)
Wireless access points and routers that are not deployed by Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology are strictly prohibited and will be removed from the network by the Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology. Other network devices that are deployed by users are permitted network access at the sole discretion of the Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology based on the device’s impact on usage and compatibility with Fairmont State University’s network.
I am a Faculty/Staff Member. How can I re-connect my computer to the wired network?
- If your computer's ethernet cable is run through your Cisco IP phone, then you should cycle or bounce the phone by doing the following:
- Press the "Settings" button.
- Quickly press **#**.
- The phone will say configuring and it may take several minutes.
- Restart your computer.
- Once restarted your connection should be established. If not contact the Solution Center at 304-367-4810 option 3.
Printer
Why can't I print to my network printer?
- Restart your computer. This will re-establish a connection to the network and authenticate you as a user.
- If you still cannot print, re-install the driver for your printer. See "How do I connect to a networked printer".
Why can't I print to my local printer?
- Restart your computer. Occasionally, your local printer will lose connection to your computer.
- Shut down the printer. Wait 15 seconds. Turn the printer back on.
- Make sure all cables from the printer to the computer are secure.
How do I connect to a networked printer?
- Click the Start button.
- Click Run.
- Type \\pcounter.
- Click Ok.
- Find the name of the printer you want to add (make-model-building code-room code).
- Double click the printer to install the driver on your computer.
How do I change my default printer?
- Click the Start button.
- Click Settings.(Some computers may not be set up for this step)
- Click Printers and Faxes.
- Right click on the printer you want to make default.
- Highlight the "Set as Default Printer" left click.
I am a student. Can I print to a network printer from my personal laptop?
Students cannot print to network printers from their personal laptops.
Can I print to a network printer if I am connected to the wireless network?
Faculty and Staff can print to network printers if they are connected to the FSU network and the VPN. See "How do I connect to a networked printer".

How do I troubleshoot a Blackboard/VISTA problem?
- Go to https://online.fairmontstate.edu.
- In the top right hand corner click Check Browser.
- If this does not open in a pop up window then see Delete Java temporary files and certificates for Windows Vista users in this Wiki.
- If there are red X's follow the suggestions in the window.
- If after clearing the cache in Java and your browser you are still experiencing problems contact the Solution Center with the following:

How do I know if my browser is compatible with Blackboard/VISTA?
- You can use the Browser Tune Up page by going to http://www.webct.com/tuneup/viewpage?name=tuneup_browser_tuneup_information#browsers
- Or, you can go to online.fairmontstate.edu and click the "Check Browser" link in the top right hand corner.
BLACKBOARD VISTA IS CURRENTLY NOT COMPATIBLE WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 8
Anyone having problems with Internet Explorer 8 should use compatibility mode for Blackboard Vista.
The latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer has been known to cause problems with Blackboard. A permanent fix is currently in the works, but until then please use compatibility mode to minimize your chance of problems.

What version of Blackboard/VISTA does FSU currently use?
- Blackboard Learning System - Vista Enterprise License (Release Vista 8.0.2)
Why can I not login to Blackboard/VISTA?
- Make sure you have activated your UCA.
- Go to online.fairmontstate.edu.
- Click on Fairmont State University.
- Click on Log In.
- Enter your UCA in the User name field.
- Enter your UCA password in the Password field.
- Click OK.
- If you are taken back to the Blackboard/VISTA Log in page you should delete your cookies and your Java temporary files.
Delete Cookies Internet Explorer 7 users
- Go to the Tools menu.
- Choose Internet Options from the drop down menu.
- Under the General Tab in the Browsing History section click the Delete... button.
- In the Delete Browsing History window choose the Delete Cookies... button.
- In the Delete Cookies window choose the Yes button when prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?".
- In the Delete Browsing History window click Close.
- In the Internet Options window click OK.
Delete Java temporary files and certificates for Windows Vista users
- Go to the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Open Control Panel.
- Switch to Classic View by clicking Classic View on the left hand side.
- Double Click the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel.
- On the General tab under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings... button.
- In the Temporary Files Settings window click the Delete Files... button.
- In the Delete Temporary Files window make sure Applications and Applets and Trace and Log Files are both selected. Click OK.
- In the Temporary Files Settings window click OK.
- In the Java Control Panel click the Security tab.
- Click the Certificates... button.
- Select each of the Certificates and click Remove.
- When all of the Certificates have been removed chose Close.
- In the Java Control Panel window click OK.
- Close the Control Panel.
In Blackboard/VISTA, why does my class say "This section is not available yet." when I click on it?
Most likely, your instructor has not added content to this course. You will not be able to enter a course until the first day of the Semester for which you are enrolled.
Why can't I upload an attachment in Blackboard/VISTA?
- Go to online.fairmontstate.edu.
- In the top right hand corner click Check Browser.
- Scroll through the results and make sure that all of the results return green Checks.
If any of your results contain red X's use the Browser Tune Up page for directions on how to correct these errors. If the Check Browser window does not open you may have Pop Ups blocked. Make sure to disable all pop up blockers in order to run the Check Browser. If the Check Browser opens but only displays "Checking Java..." text then you may have an unsupported version of JAVA or an unsupported browser. Go to the Browser Tune Up page and follow the steps to make sure your software is supported by Blackboard/VISTA. If you still have problems see the Delete Cookies Internet Explorer 7 users and Delete Java temporary files and certificates for Windows Vista users sections above. Each account is limited to a total of 75MB worth of file uploads. There is no limit to the file size of each upload.
How do I install the correct Java Verion for Blackboard/WebCT?
Blackboard Vista uses the Java Runtime Environment for certain key features. But like many Java-based programs, certain versions of Java work better with Blackboard than others. To avoid Java related problems that may affect your ability to use the Blackboard system, be sure to do the following:
- Install the correct version of Java onto your computer.
- Uninstall all other versions from your computer.
- Turn off automatic Java updates.
For Windows Vista users:
Install the correct Java version
Click Here to download the correct version of Java for Fairmont State's Vista/WebCT. Click the Get It Now Button.
- Uninstall all other versions
- Go to Control Panel.
- Choose Program and Features.
- Find Java SE Runtime Environment 6.
- Double Click and choose uninstall.
- Turn off automatic Java updates
- Go to Fairmont State Vista This will cause the Java icon to appear in the windows system tray at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
- Right click on the icon
- Select Open Control Panel.
- Click the Update tab--Make sure Check for Updates Automatically is unchecked.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
For Windows XP users:
Is there a file size limit for what I can upload to Blackboard/VISTA?
No, there is not. However, there is a limit to the total storage available and that is 75MB per account.
FELiX
Why can't I log into FELiX?
- Your username for FELiX, Webmail, and Blackboard/VISTA is your Unified Computer Account (UCA). The password for your UCA expires every six months. If you are unable to log in see "How do I change my UCA Password" under the Account section of this wiki.
FTP
How do I access my FTP space?
To access the FTP server, open up
- [Computer] on Windows Vista OR
- [My Documents] or [My Computer] on Windows XP
on the desktop.
In the address bar, type
(If you are a student) ftp://studentsftp.fairmontstate.edu/
(If you are a faculty/staff member) ftp://ftp.fairmontstate.edu/
Hit [Enter] key, which should bring up the log-in screen. Type your UCA and password.
You can now drag your files to our ftp site and also drag and retrieve files from our server to your desktop.
Students E-Mail
Why can't I log into Webmail?
- To log into Webmail go to https://email.fairmontstate.edu
- Enter only your UCA in the UCA field. (example: ffalcon)
- Enter your UCA password into the Password field.
- Click Log On.
- Select the email account you wish to log onto.
- Click Continue.
- If you receive an error message that says "WARNING: Your password contains your username. You will be unable to login to Microsoft Outlook Live. Please change your UCA password so that it does not contain your UCA. Click here to change your UCA password." use the link provided and change your password.
- If you receive an error message that says "You could not be logged on to Outlook Web Access. Make sure your username and password are correct, and then try again." your UCA password may have expired. In that case go to the "How do I change my UCA password" section of this wiki.
- If you receive the following error message after entering your uca and password using the FSU and PC&TC webmail portal,
Unable to synchronize Exchange Labs account with active directory. Error code was: Error running PowerShell script to find account. pipe.Invoke()failed with this message: Runspace never became available. Server may be under excessive load. Please try again in 5 minutes. Parameter name: PSRunCommand.
Do the following:
- Go to http://www.outlook.com
- Enter your entire email address in the Windows Live ID: field.
- Enter your password.
IMPORTANT: If you change your password in the Outlook Live envioronment, where your mailbox is stored, it will no longer synchronize with your uca password. It is recommended that you always change your password by changing your uca password on the FSU PC&TC websites.
Why can't I log into www.outlook.com?
- If you have recently change your UCA password and have not used the Webmail Portal to log into your e-mail account your password change will not sync to your Outlook Live account.
- Log into Webmail and the password change will take effect.
How do I activate my email account?

How do I set up Exchange ActiveSync on an AT&T Apple iPhone?
- If this is the first e-mail account on your iPhone, tap Mail. Otherwise, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
- Tap Microsoft Exchange.
- Tap in the E-mail box and enter your full e-mail address (for example, tony@contoso.com).
- Tap in the Username box and enter your full e-mail address again.
- Tap in the Password box and enter your password. Optionally, tap in the Description box and enter a short description for the account.
- Tap Next on the upper right corner of the screen.
- Tap in the Server box and enter m.outlook.com. If you are running software version 3.0, see below for instructions on how to find your server name.
- Tap Next.
- Choose the type of information you want to synchronize. By default, Mail, Calendar, and Contacts are all turned on. To turn off synchronization for a type of information, tap and slide the switch to OFF.
- Tap Save.
- If you're prompted to create a new passcode, tap Continue and enter a numeric passcode. You'll need to enter the passcode twice.
Caution: If you tap Close, you'll need to configure your passcode in the iPhone Settings application before you can view your information on your iPhone.
What else do I need to know?
If you are prompted to create a passcode and don't create one, you won't be able to send and receive e-mail.
The Apple iPhone running software version 3.0 requires you to use an alternate server name. To find that server name, sign in to your account at the following address: https://pod51000.outlook.com/owa/. After you sign in successfully, the address you entered will resolve to an address that contains the server name you need to use. For example, if the address resolves to https://pod51005.outlook.com/owa, enter pod51005.outlook.com for your server name.

How do I change my preferred email address?
- Your preferred email address can be changed by contacting the Solution Center at 304-367-4810 option 3, help@fairmontstate.edu, or 104 Colebank Hall.
- Your preferred email address must be a FSU or PC&TC address.(Ex. ffalcon1@fairmontstate.edu, Freddie.Falcon@fairmontstate.edu, ffalcon2@pierpont.edu, Franny.Falcon@pierpont.edu)
How do I set a personalized email address?
- Log into FELiX.
- Click the Employee tab.
- Click "Create a Personalized EMail address.
- Follow the instructions.
- Click Submit.
- Your personalized email address will become your preferred email address and will appear as such in the Online Campus Directory.
How do I set up my iPhone for use with my Fairmont State or Pierpont C&TC account?
When setting up the exchange server to fsmail, remember to have your Internet connection turned on.
- From your I phone go to settings page and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Under accounts heading tap on Add Account
- This screen should display a listing of email providers like AOL, Yahoo, Gmail. The first option is Microsoft Exchange tap on it to setup for a FSU email account.
- Title of this screen should be Settings, below that you should see email, domain, username, and password.
In the Email field enter in your full Fairmont State or Pierpont C&TC email (ex. jdoe@fairmontstate.edu)
- Domain enter "fairmontstate".
- For username and password enter in your UCA and current password
- Hit next at the top of the screen and a new field should appear called Server Name. enter "fsmail.fairmontstate.edu" and hit next at the top of the screen.
- After following these steps you also have the options to add contacts and calendar to be pushed forward to your iPhone.

How do I configure Microsoft Outlook 2007? (On Campus)
- Open outlook.
- On the outlook 2003 startup screen click next.
- On the email accounts screen make sure the "yes" button is checked and click next.
- On the server type screen check Microsoft exchange server and click next.
- On the exchange server setting screen
- In the Microsoft exchange server type "pviex101".
- In the user name box type your UCA and then click to check name.
- Click next.
- Click finish. (It may be several minutes while outlook gathers all of your data.)
How do I configure Microsoft Outlook 2007? (Off Campus)
- Go to the control panel. Typically you can click control panel from the start menu. It can also be accessed through My Computer.
- If the control panel says “Pick a Category”, click “Switch to Classic View” on the left side of the window.
- Double-click the “Mail” icon.
- If the “Mail Setup” dialog appears, click the “Show Profiles” button. .
- On the “Mail” dialog, click the radio button “Prompt for a profile to be used”
- Click the “Add” button to add a new mail profile. .
- Give the profile a name, such as FSU. .
- On the “E-mail Accounts” dialog, choose “Add a new e-mail account”.
- Select “Microsoft Exchange Server”.
- For the “Microsoft Exchange Server” field, enter pviex101.fairmontstate.edu
- For the “User Name” field, enter your UCA. Then click the “More Settings” button.
- Click “Ok” if you are prompted with an error saying “The connection to the Microsoft Exchange server is unavailable.”
- Click “Ok” if you are prompted with a dialog box asking for the Microsoft Exchange Server and Mailbox.
- Click the “Connection” tab on the “Microsoft Exchange Server” dialog.
- Check “Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP”.
- Click the “Exchange Proxy Settings” button.
- On the “Exchange Proxy Settings” dialog, in the “Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange:”, enter fsmail.fairmontstate.edu
- Check “Connect using SSL only”.
- Check “On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP”.
- Check “On slow networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP”.
- On the drop down box for “Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange” choose “NTLM Authentication”.
- Click “Ok” until you are exited back to the control panel. Close the control panel and go into Outlook. When asked which profile to use, select the “FSU” profile. You will be prompted for your username and password. Enter your username as fairmontstate\uca (substitute your actual uca for uca) and enter your password.
How do I import a distribution list into Outlook from Microsoft Excel or Access?
Import a list from Access
- Make sure you have the database saved where you know were it is.
- Open outlook.
- You may want to create a new folder under contacts so the list will stay together.
- Click on file.
- Click on import and export (a box will pop up).
- Click on import from another program or file and click next.
- Another box will appear click on Microsoft Access and then click next.
- In the next box click browse and find where the file is saved. Click next.
- Click in contacts or the new folder you created then click next.
- In the next box check the box beside the name of the file and click finish.
- Check in folder in outlook to make sure the list is there.
Import a list from Excel
- First, highlight the cells you want to import into outlook (make sure there is a row header or a blank row at the top of the list).
- Type the name of the file the cell name box (left side right underneath the font box, if you are clicked in cell A1 the box will show A1).
- Press the enter key.
- Save the file.
- Open Outlook- follow the steps above except in step 7 you will choose Microsoft Excel.

How do I share my calendar?
- Click calendar.
- Click "Share my calendar" link--the calendar properties window will appear.
- Click the permissions tab..
- Click Add button.
- Select groups and/or individuals to view your calendar.
- Click Addbutton--repeat until list is complete.
- configure permissions for each group or individual added.
- click OK button.
To remove access to your calendar:
- Click calendar.
- Click "Share my calendar" link--the calendar properties window will appear.
- Click the permissions tab.
- Select the group or individual.
- Click Remove button.
How do I view a shared calendar?
- Click calendar.
- Click "Open a Shared Calendar" link--the Open a Shared Calendar window will appear.
- Enter the last name of the individual or the correct name of the group..
- Click OK button the Check Names window will appear.
- Select the correct groups or individual whose calendar you wish to view.
- Click OK button.

Hardware
Why is my monitor/tower not coming on?
- Check to make sure all power cords are plugged in.
- Make sure all cords connecting the monitor to the tower are plugged in tight.
- If all cords are plugged in tight and that does not fix the problem call the solution center at 4810.
Why is my wireless mouse/keyboard not working?
- Most wireless devices have a reset button. Locate the reset button and press it.
- Restart the computer.
- Make sure there are fresh batteries in the device.
Software
Where can I purchase discounted software?
Faculty and Staff can purchase a home copy of Microsoft Office or Microsoft Vista from Heaster Hart by contacting Pam Heaster at 304-624-5485. These products cost $25. Note that the licenses are only good while you are still employed by Fairmont State or Pierpont C&TC.
Students can receive discounts on Microsoft Products and other educational software by going to www.journeyed.com/select.
Where can I get antivirus software?
Students can go to http://www.fairmontstate.edu/studentresources/default.asp or http://www.pierpont.edu/studentresources/default.asp and click on the SOPHOS link on the right hand side of the page. Enter students\your uca into the UCA field and your UCA password into the password field. Run when prompted. Faculty and Staff can also download the software from these locations. However, when prompted faculty and staff are only required to put in their UCA and password.
How can I tell what Operating System I am running?
For Windows users:
- Wait for your computer to load the Desktop.
- Right Click on My Computer or Computer. You may have an icon on your desktop that says this. If not, click the Start button.
- Choose Properties.
- Your Operating System and other System information will be listed here.
For Mac users:
- Click the apple menu in the top left corner of the screen.
- In the apple menu click "About this Mac" or "About this Computer"

You may have turned auto voice mail on by hitting * (star) 3. To turn off auto voice mail:
- Pick up hand set.
- Press # (pound) 3.
- Listen for three tones. (doot doot doot)
- Hang up.
How do I check my voicemail when using an analog phone?
For the phone you are using:
- Dial your extension.
- When you hear your greeting,press * (star). You will be promted to enter your id.
- Enter the extension number of the phone you wish to check messages for,press # (pound).
- Enter the password for the phone you wish to check messages for,press # (pound).
- Follow the directions to listen to voice mail.
How do I forward calls using an audix phone?
Toggle on
- Pick up hand set.
- Press * (star) 2.
- Enter the extension number to forward calls.
- Listen for three tones (doot doot doot).
- Hang up hand set.

How do I check voicemail using an Cisco Systems phone?
For the phone you are using:
- Press the messages button or dial 3000.
- Enter your password initial is 12345.
- Follow the directions to set up your voice mailbox.
To check voicemail from another VIOP phone:
- Press the messages button or dial 3000.
- When prompted to enter your password, press * (star). You will be prompted to enter your Id.
- Enter the extension number of the phone you wish to check messages for, press # (pound).
- Enter the password for the phone you wish to check messages for, press # (pound).
- Follow the directions to listen to voice mail.
To check the voicemail from off campus:
- Call your phone number.
- When the voicemail answers press *(star).
- You will be prompted to enter your ID. Enter your 4 digit extension and press # (pound).
- You will be prompted to enter your password. Enter your password and press # (pound).
- You will be prompted "To leave a message for...press 1". Wait for the next option.
- You will be prompted "To access your mailbox press 2". Press 2.
As you listen there are some other commands you may find useful:
- Press 1 to replay message.
- Press 2 to save the message.
- Press 3 to delete the message.
- Press 4 to slow the message down.
- Press 6 to speed the messages up.
- Press 7 to rewind the message.
- Press 8 to pause the message.
- Press 9 to fast forward the message.
